the importance of flexibility in gymnastics, dance & Cheerleading
Specifically, Flexibility is crucial:
-
To prevent injury & chronic pain!
-
Being more flexible in the areas targeted below gives a tumbler a greater range of motion when they kick into skills (most tumbling). This means they can kick more powerfully into a skill or tumbling pass which leads to a more powerful skill/pass in general!
-
Better lines in gymnastics. The judges evaluate specific lines when performing a skill (click here to see an example)
-
By stretching and strengthening each area, all leaps & jumps will be easier to execute:
-
Higher leaps & jumps
-
More range of motion allows you to kick with more power
-
Bigger split in leaps & jumps
-
Less strains/pulls & muscle tears
While “genetic predisposition” largely determines the maximum ranges of motion an individual gymnast can possibly achieve, the “training environment” determines the extent to which her potential flexibility can be realized. That is why having an effective flexibility training program throughout one’s career is essential to success”
